Adil Rashid gives England selectors timely reminder of his talents as Yorkshire beat Lancashire

Adil Rashid gave the England selectors a timely reminder of his bowling prowess to inspire Yorkshire to victory over Lancashire at Headingley.

The leg-spinner, who has slipped down the national pecking order of late, opened the Yorkshire bowling and ended up taking four wickets for 26 runs in four overs to give his team a Twenty20 double over their Roses rivals.

Rashid tightened Yorkshire’s grip on the contest after skipper Andrew Gale had put his team in command with a fluent 60 that included six fours and a six as the home side got off to a flying start.

Gale put on an opening stand of 69 with Jonny Bairstow before his colleague fell lbw to Gary Keedy for 32, but there was no stopping Yorkshire as Adam Lyth helped his captain maintain the momentum with a 33-ball 45.

When Gale went off the bowling of Tom Smith, Gary Ballance underlined his potential with an unbeaten 25 as Yorkshire moved into a strong position with a performance that augurs well for their chances of invigorating their disappointing County Championship campaign.

The Lancashire reply began badly when Joe Root ran out opener Stephen Moore for nine before Rashid took centre stage by catching Smith off his own bowling and then claiming the wickets of Karl Brown, Gareth Cross and Luke Procter.

Azeem Rafiq also showed off his promise by removing Steven Croft and Sajid Mahmood as Yorkshire eased to an 11-run win.
