Despite quitting Test cricket last summer, the 38 year-old has continued to represent his country at one-day level.
But Muralitharan, who has 800 Test wickets and 517 one-day wickets, will step aside completely after the conclusion of the World Cup, which begins next month.
"I'm going to retire from international cricket, totally, after this World Cup," he told BBC Radio Five Live.
Sri Lanka are co-hosts of the tournament with India and Bangladesh, providing the perfect arena for Muralitharan to bow out of the game.
The Sri Lankans open their World Cup campaign against Canada, with Australia, Pakistan, New Zealand, Zimbabwe and Kenya making up Group A.
Muralitharan has already lifted one World Cup with his country in 1996, and would love to repeat the feat on home soil.
"Our preparation has been good, but I think we have a good chance because we're playing in Sri Lanka," he said.
"We have experienced players and young players, and our side has done very well for the last two years in one-day cricket."
Muralitharan will continue to play in the Indian Premier League, representing Kochi.
