The Australian was recently demoted from the International Cricket Council’s elite panel of umpires after a string of mistakes were highlighted by the decision review system. His last match was due to be the third Test between West Indies and India in Dominica next week but the ICC announced on Wednesday that he had stood down “in the wake of some unfair criticism”.
It follows comments from MS Dhoni, the India captain, who said after the first Test: “If the correct decisions were made, the game would have finished much earlier and I would have been in the hotel by now.”
The ICC defended Harper’s record, saying he had a 96 per cent accuracy rate during series involving India. “We have every faith in Daryl to finish the series and while we regret his decision we do respect it,” said David Richardson,.the ICC's general manager of cricket.
Harper has been replaced for the third Test by England's Richard Kettleborough.
