Zander de Bruyn held a shaky Surrey batting performance together as the hosts continued to exchange blows with Northamptonshire.

Surrey stumbled to 182 for four for an overall lead of 128 - yet much will still depend on South African de Bruyn, who remains unbeaten on 28.

Having allowed Northamptonshire to wriggle off the hook at 163 for seven in order to secure a slender first innings lead earlier in the day, Surrey looked to make a solid start to their second innings.

Michael Brown and Gary Wilson dug in but, after two hours, Brown wafted outside off-stump to be caught behind as seam bowler Lee Daggett’s 100th first-class victim.

Ten balls after tea Wilson went for 42 and became the first victim in four seasons for occasional wrist spinner Rob White.

De Bruyn teamed up with skipper Rory Hamilton-Brown to add 61 inside 22 overs but, with his score on 41, Hamilton-Brown aimed an expansive drive at a Chaminda Vaas in-swinger only to drag the ball onto his stumps and leave de Bruyn and nightwatchman Tim Linley to bat out the closing overs.
