The ashes of 2010: Telegraph Roundtable with Geoffrey Boycott, Ian Chappell and Michael Vaughan, part 1

Michael Vaughan I think this second test, such as a rounded performance was so good that I've ever seen in England. I do not think that you can highlight an area where they can improve. I've never seen Australian hunt ball and look as if they were in pain, fumble the ball dropped the ball so often or dive on the ball so often. England were forced into a corner and react to what England position under pressure.

IC Also the Australians are not used to be on the ground for long periods without taking some ATMs. I want to say, Jesus, six for expenses! It is easy to be a right fielder when catches come along fairly regularly, but when you put a guy in five and 150 or 200 everyone remembers that. Beyond of the Australian side, if you dropped a capture you knew would come on 10 minutes later another chance.

GB I think that our selectors were also much better than Australian selectors - removal of two seamers Brisbane and dropping, then two more and the same thing with the spinner. They should have kept that they had been put in place for the ashes with [Nathan Hauritz]. Our selectors were very clear and very targeted. They asked ex-acteurs - I don't know, talking about Michael and myself, then they disappeared and composed their own spirit. James Whitaker is very well-known, it is never a test match, it goes and monitors all counties. They probably did a bad selection in the past two years - lad that they picked at Headingley.

MV Darren Pattinson.

GB And they advocate that. Dusty Miller always puts his hand and said, ' you're right, Fiery (GB), I've made a mistake and does not have to go and watch it myself, it won't again happen '. If they defend the indefensible, but they have well otherwise.

CI The Australian pickers were before errors, but two guys named Warne and McGrath cover for them.

SB Was not it poor planning do Greg Chappell [IC's brother, who was appointed a selector] just before the series? Who does destabilize the whole implementation?

IC In addition, you are better to have a good as an ordinary selector. [General laughter].

MV even in the 1990s, that I think we never arrived at a series of ash and thrown in a pot that has never played cricket test match. I felt sorry for the kid [Xavier Doherty]. It is lobait is to get rid of Kevin Pietersen is absolute madness.

GB You cannot choose a bowler just to get rid of a player who is barmy. I see Australia and in England as a reversal from four years ago. We had all sorts of problems - team unity, injuries, selection, loss of shape, all - and it turned around from right.

MV England are settled team, there is not a player looking over his shoulder. There are three or four Australian thinking "this could be my last match. So you don't feel part of the team, you do not know if you'll be here next week. You know you are there for some time because it gives you trust more to go outside and your game.

GB Take Alastair Cook. It is about forefoot - if it gets in the wrong place it looks like an ugly duckling, so they only worked with him and he looks out at this time.

SB Could I just return to the selection of Hauritz: it is not particularly bad omit a counter of the Australia took a quick left hander to create crude to Bowl in?

IC, I thought that Hauritz had start series because in 2009 in England, he overthrew quite Andrew Strauss and cook. I thought that Cook was going to be one of the problems of England in the series - which not has not proved to be the case. But if you have a bowler who can poorly Strauss, which is one of the really big guys for England, then I could play it.

MV we picked Ashley Giles because he could bat and OK on the ground and to make the team work. I think that is what the Australia obtained with Hauritz.

IC The other thing that they should have overlooked is its India form. England never went to play in the same way, using their feet and so forth.

GB I do not think it will hurt us too if we play Chris Tremlett Perth. If you plan well, things tend to go for you. When you get a bad, you always try to catch up with the error in the previous week, and it retains to go wrong.

MV England planning has been very good. We have all areas covered and ready made replacements. If I were the Australian, I play on a quick one-stop bouncing. If they play on the flat wickets, forget, it is the end of the series.

SB England were bounced out by a handle in January on a rapid in Johannesburg.

GB This is true, you need rhythm and rebound and Australians are more than we. There's still no guarantee that they win because of the way things are going, but at the present time, they need to win two of the three, so you can go for a damn like hang on a platter autour victory. If we continue to play as we are, we you [CI] bat just outside of the game.

MV will prepare window a leaders or cricket win the Australia window?

IC if an administrator has come an Australian curator and stated "we want that prepare you a certain type of pitch" conservative would tell him to get stuffed and go.

MV really? OH good.

GB What they play, the chances are that England will get a match draw or victory. There are too many cracks in the Australian model per minute.

MV need Ricky Ponting. Ponting has average in the next three games probably 70. It requires large series. I think that it plays in fact all rights, it is simply out.

IC the difference today is that Mike Hussey in virtually every sleeve had a lucky break and Ponting has not. If you are looking for a precedent, then Ponting mostly had to do what is Don Bradman in 1936-0

SB Make a double percent in all remaining tests?

The Australia were 2-0 down and won the three latter. Bradman have huge runs in each of these three, but then Bradman had too much of some launchers.

MV This is the best way he [Ponting] can lead his team. Forget tips shortly that it performs in the field – just go and get a double-cents.
