V Sri Lanka England: run-machine Alastair Cook ignores the barbs and allows good times roll

It is a drummer who scored six centuries in his past 12 sleeve Test, his last cent week last of the Lord, taking its tally to 18, with only Andrew Strauss, Graham Gooch, Ken Barrington, Geoffrey Boycott, Colin Cowdrey and Wally Hammond now before of him on the list of England.

And along the way in which the week last Cook also passed Sir Jack Hobbs go to 17 in the list of all time England run-gatherers in Test cricket.

Cook is 26 years old. The record number of centuries is 22. There currently 5.465 tests; The Gooch record is 8 900. It does not need to do the math.

But this form term will end. He always does. We know that, and Cook knows. He knew as well the last time that I interviewed in Perth in December. "You must always this doubt haunting as a paste," he said then, having marked just 235 not out and 148, "' and if I mark all runs more." You always think: "what next sleeves?" "

Fatalism hunts each drummer, however well. As was the case, Perth was not particularly well, with just 32 and 13 notes. But it was a minor blip. The term-machine soon angled to the action. And therefore which Cook now think its additional drunk with tracks? "It has been another incredible couple of months for me," he said. "You just continue to try to cherish it.". "You know the form will not forever last, but you want to just it goes as long that you can keep.

Sometimes, as journalists, we want a little more than that, though. So I pushed him a little further. "I don't really know what to say about this race of form without sounding arrogant," he said. "I just couldn't have dreamed about all this.". This only shows that if you continue to work, sometimes things work out for you. »

Humility was genuine. It is always with the sympathetic Cook. But this was going nowhere, and we had already dissected capitulation of second period of Northampton his beloved to Leinster in Heineken Cup final (which is rugby, in case you ask you), so I thought I would start asking more awkward questions. You know, such as: was he beats too slowly in the hour before lunch on the fifth day to Lord against sri Lanka? Is it really a third drag to lace the boots Paul Collingwood? Is he really thinks that he can captain on the side of a day in England?

It is only when he has rather rehash said something like "I like the way which you guys in the media think", that I stopped to think and feel real sympathy for him. These criticisms are harsh, rather as picking fault with a thread on the Bayeux Tapestry, but they are deployed. This column is no. But they are deployed.

And it is to the credit of Cook that he was always willing to answer honestly. Of course, he is aware that the hour before lunch may not its most beautiful. "Maybe I got my tempo was wrong in this half an hour or 45 minutes before lunch,"that it recognizes."."

"Perhaps I could have sought to be a little more aggressive, but they have reversed really good to me.". If you think, we started the day 156 to come, and we certainly wanted to give a few kiosks away, because pressure can be a fun thing. Overall, we had a good morning session, and we did register the number of targets for runs, we were looking for score [they scored 111 in the session]. KP [Kevin Pietersen] played really well. »

We talk about the statements. "They are a very hard thing," he said. "It is not like a County game, where you get more points, then the next game." Test-match wins should never be easy. It is always going to be people who say that you ought to declare an hour earlier. »

Cook supported decision Andrew Strauss to bat on the first Test in Cardiff, allowing Ian Bell pass of his century. "We were actually said it might have been another band of rain coming to 16: 30," he explains. "So that would have left only cricket for another hour and a half [play started at 15: 00]." I thought that, for the sake of two overs, it was the right decision. »

Speaking of good decisions, there are those who feel Cook should not even be in the side of a day, and even less to be captain. There are those who worry that it could affect his Test-match game. "I believe that it will really help expand me my game," he said. "They are distinct skills, but it is one of the challenges to a pulp." I've got no fear to go to the top, entering order does not quickly enough. I believe that I can do. »

Cook attended a preliminary selection meeting last Wednesday, with the team for the series of five matches against Sri Lanka will be announced each week on Tuesday. "OK, we had a disappointing World Cup," says Cook a side, was not in. "but if you look at that side has done over the past two years, we have had some historical results and improvement of the form of a day." It is is not to reinvent the wheel by any stretch of the imagination. We will try and work in some areas, but we will continue a lot of excellent work that Strauss started. »

As for the capture in the third slip: Cook dropped an and a to the Lord. "It's a crazy world!" he sighs in what he thinks is unfair comparison with Collingwood. "Colly was an outstanding fielder and 99 percent of the time, it would have made the catch that I dropped, but I am confident that I can get there."

It is time for some of lightness. Matt prior and the broken window? "It could be very dangerous," Cook said, but it was a total accident. The funny thing was that about five minutes later, someone from the CMC came in and asked "what window was broken." Swanny [Graeme Swann] laughing his head off the coast and said "The one with the large hole in it!" "

Cook has his own tale little of the Lord. It is normally a soul placid, but clearly irritated out for 96 in the first round. "I was so angry because he was such a poor shot", he said. "I thought it was shorter that [it was tempting to draw Dilhara Fernando].". When I returned to the locker room, I put my bat down close enough where Swanny was changed and had to apologize. It was unlike me. "I could have disappointed, but Chris Tremlett did say to me then ' well, 96 is much better than nothing." »

Tremlett is a wise man, and sometimes in the future, Cook might consider these words. But not for the moment. Ninety-six is a failure for him at this time.
