The leg spinner figures are believed to be the best by a spinner on the first day of a New Road championship season as Worcestershire entered the competition in 1899. It was a mature performance that may have been a way convincing Miller that Rashid is ready for Test cricket if England decides to play another spinner Graeme Swann alongside.

England have used until now with parsimony, the Rashid in only five days-one and as many internationals T20 internationals. Piloted by cup of the world to replace Mike Yardy, he arrived in Colombo, just in time to watch the defeat of quarter-final of England by Sri Lanka.

Rashid has helped Australia South win the competition for the Big Bash ttwweennttyy Australia before his travels for a second half occupied the winter has taken to the Caribbean, where he took with 13 wickets in four matches for the England Lions.

There was a small slow tour for Rashid yesterday, but he had most of its ATMs with intelligent variations of flight and pace and the regular use of his googly and the cursor.

"I came into the season with a bit of practice match in winter but for six wickets in the first match is a reminder of confidence," said Rashid.

"The land was quite dry and it has proved that slowly so I had to mix, many googlies and bowling cursors.".

Rashid reversed a few bad balls but could not say the same for the seamers, which allowed Worcestershire thrive in the morning and then rally the evening when Matt Mason and Alan Richardson plunder 68 in a lively last-window stand.

Mason admitted eight legs and deflected Ryan Sidebottom for six in half a century 48-ball. He was trying to traverse the single which took him to a career-best score of 64 when he was crushed by a direct strike by Steve Patterson.

Some bookmakers have made Worcestershire 20-1 on favourites to be relegated after one season in the first Division for the fourth time and 100-1 to win the title.

It two years ago that they were relegated without winning a match, but the battling qualities which secured their promotion against the odds last season were evident at times here.

Daryl Mitchell, a modest and underestimated cricket, played widely, taking three furnaces Patterson lost an over, until it was pinned IPN supporting forward cursor to Rashid, a short of his first half century since he was appointed Captain Worcestershire last August.
